Flight Simulation Games for the Ultimate Virtual Flying Experience

Flight simulation games are an exciting way to experience the feel of being a pilot without the expense and risk.  Most simulator software offers a variety of aircraft to try out, but there is one that allows you to fly anywhere in the world with over 100 planes to choose from, from the old to the new, the small to the large.

FlightProSim is a complete flight simulator software package, which can be downloaded from the internet. Its basic package features 20 aircraft, and scenery and airports around California, but purchasers are able to go to the Members Area of their website to download over 80 different aircraft – either one at a time or in one batch, 20,000 different airports, and accurate scenery for the whole world.

Flight simulation games were originally developed for military purposes.  Clear back to World War I, a simulation was developed to teach a pilot how to lead their target when learning to fire a machine gun.  They also had a pneumatic device that simulated the movement of the plane with a replica cockpit mounted on top.

In the late 1940s, a simulator was developed specifically for an airline company that had no movement or visual, but the cockpit controls were fully functional.  The first visual systems provided a video from a camera being flown over an area that was then displayed in the simulator for the pilot.

In the early 70s, the realism was improved with the development of a collimating lens apparatus which, when projected, provided a distant focal point for the pilot.  Since then, the flight simulation systems have become increasingly more sophisticated and realistic.  Soon thereafter, flight simulation games became available to the private citizen for personal enjoyment.

Flightprosim opens with a series of screens that allows the pilot to select the desired aircraft, and then the airport and runway. The next screen allows the user to select features such as horizon effect, enhanced runway lighting, and specular effect (necessary for the 3D graphic cockpits). On this same screen, the user can select the time of day, and the current weather and even the season.

Also on this screen, the player can choose the Multiplayer option – playing over the internet with other flightprosim users, to fly in formation. In addition, the player can choose to have the game be full screen or not.

When using flight simulation games advanced features (opened with the mere click of the mouse) the pilot can set what equipment he or she wants to use – the keyboard only, or joystick (yoke and rudder pedals are also supported), or mouse. Also on these screens, the player can set altitude, if he or she prefers to start in the air instead of on the ground, latitude and longitude, airspeed, heading, roll and pitch. This is also where the player will set up network connections.

After making selections, the pilot hits the Run button, and the aircraft engines start, the cockpit view comes up, and the player is ready to roll.  These screens are easy to open and to read – especially after one has read the PDF instructions that are also downloadable from the Members section.

The basic install package contains scenery for a small area around San Francisco. However, the whole world is available as a separate and modest purchase. You just download the self-installation packs that have 10 degree by 10 degree chunks of scenery.  This scenery is accurate and realistic, because it’s based on vmap0 (a vector-based collection of Geographic information system (GIS) data about Earth.  Level 0 is relatively low resolution coverage of lakes, rivers, roads, railroads, cities, towns, and land cover.

Flight simulation games have become more and more high-tech, crossing over from a military training to personal use, and FlightSimPro is no exception.  Whether you are an arm-chair pilot or interested in a possible career in aviation, I think you will be amazed at the realism and enjoyment this software has to offer.
