Top of Their Field – Helicopter Simulator Download

FlightProSim is software that allows the armchair pilot to fly any one of over a hundred aircraft. When people think of flight simulators they usually think just of airplanes, but FlightProSim offers a helicopter simulator download as well, as part of their overall package.

Like all of their aircraft, the helicopters can be flown by keyboard alone, but FlightProSim also supports joysticks, yokes and rudder pedals, which certainly enhance the flying experience.

Here are the helicopters currently available to fly from FlightProSim:

Sikorsky-S51
Sikorsky-76C
Sikorsky-S58 (Choctaw)
Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion
Sikorsky UH60 BlackHawk
Alouette III
Piasecki H-21C
Piasecki HUP
Lynx-WG13
Bell Boeing V22 Osprey

The helicopter simulator download includes helicopters that are the tops in their field.

Perhaps the most famous helicopter designer is Igor Sikorsky (1889-1972) who founded the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in 1923. He was responsible for the first “viable” American helicopter, the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300, which he designed and flew in 1940. It was not the first helicopter flight in the world – Europeans had long been experimenting with and flying them for decades.

Of the many Sikorsky helos available to fly from this helicopter simulator download, the Super Stallion and the BlackHawk are perhaps the most famous. The BlackHawk is in use by militaries all over the world. The Super Stallion is the largest and heaviest helo flown by the US military.

The Alouette III, or Lark is built by Aerospatiale, and has been used by the French Armed Forces since 1960. The helo was originally built by Sud Aviation, a French-state owned aircraft manufacturer, which was taken over by Aerospatiale in 1970. In turn, Aerospatiale is now part of the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS).

Frank Piasecki founded the Piasecki Helicopter Corporation in 1940 by (when it was the P-V Engineering Forum).  The name was changed to Piasecki Helicopter in 1946. Frank Piasecki (1919 – 2008) pioneered tandem rotor helicopter designs.  He also created the compound helicopter concept of vectored thrust using a ducted propeller.

The Piasecki H-25 is called the Army Mule or the HUP Retriever.  It is a helo with a single radial engine, and twin overlapping tandem rotors. It was retired in 1964. Its tandem rotors would continue to be used in other Piasecki designs, including the H-21.

The Piasecki H-21C is instantly recognizable, and known as the “flying banana,” because its aft fuselage is canted at an upward angle to ensure that the rotors did not hit each other in flight. It was originally designed as an Arctic rescue helo. It became famous as the Shawnee, used during Vietnam.

The Westland Lynx (WG13) is a British multi-purpose military helicopter designed and built by Westland Helicopters.  It was originally intended as a utility craft for both civil and naval usage, and has become very popular in the air forces of several countries.

The Bell Boeing V22 Osprey is not really a helicopter but rather a VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft. The Osprey was in production for over a decade, and has been flying since 2005.

Learning to fly helos can be challenging, but fun, so make sure you do take advantage of the helicopter simulator download from FlightProSim.
